The Rubus Concept
Rubus is a private label created and used by wholesaler and importer Kysela Pere et Fils of Winchester, Virginia in order to buy, bottle and market wine found at incredible quality/price ratio. All Rubus wines are selected by Fran Kysela MS. It was first used for a superb batch of 1,200 cases of Amador county Zinfandel back in 1997. The wine sold out in a few days and that Rubus label remained dormant.
During a trip in California in 2009, Fran tasted some incredible wines (available in bottle but without label) that were being offered for a song in a distressed post financial meltdown market. So he resurrected the Rubus brand with an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag’s Leaps district in Napa Valley, followed by an excellent Chardonnay from Russian River Valley, and then a robust Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi. Since Fran owns the label, he’s able to negotiate each year for the best wine possible.
Rubus, Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 – $19.99
Rubus, Old Vine Zinfandel 2014
For this rocking bargain, Fran found an old vine vineyard in Lodi of stellar quality that had excess inventory. Ruby red in color, this lush, robust red shows flavors of cherries and raspberries, and notes of vanilla with a smooth finish. This is the best price for quality Zin we’ve ever seen!
Rubus, Cabernet Sauvignon California 2013 – $12.99
This California Cabernet has an impeccable balance of fruit, acid, and structure, along with classic cassis, mulberry and vanilla notes. Drink now, thank us later.
Rubus, Shiraz Barossa 2014 – $19.99
Rubus, Sauvignon Blanc Waipara Valley 2015 – $12.99
A classic New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, the Rubus certainly fulfills Fran’s goal, but with a twist. Unlike most Kiwi Sauvignons, the Rubus doesn’t come from the Marlborough region, but from the cooler Waipara Valley. It has the expected gooseberry and citrus aromas, but adds a perfect balance of fruit and acid, and a lively yet soft finish.
Rubus, Proprietary Reserve Red Australia 2014 – $12.99
This Australian red is a blend of three red grapes known for producing robust, fruit forward wines: Rubired, Durif (aka Petite Sirah) and Shiraz. A cross between Tinto Cao and Alicante Ganzin, Rubired is known for being particularly adapted to hot climates like Australia’s Barossa Valley, where this wine is made, and for producing dark wines. It shows blueberry, black cherry and red raspberry fruits in a lushly fruited palate with a soft finish. It’s a perfect match with BBQ.
Rubus, Chardonnay Colchagua 2016 – $9.99
Special Order Only
The Rubus Chardonnay was originally made with California grapes, but in 2010 the quality just wasn’t there, so Fran had to go a little farther afield in his search for quality, all the way to Chile’s Colchagua Valley. The result is this classic new world Chardonnay, round and creamy on the palate, with pineapple flavors and a touch of oak. It’s proof that good things are worth searching for.
Rubus, Proprietary White Blend 2015 – $9.99
