The Fiefs Vendéens wine region is located in the unknown southwest corner of the Loire Valley, not far from Cognac country and less than twenty miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The J. Mourat wines come from the sub-region Fiefs Vendéens, which they rescued from virtual obscurity. A Fief is a preserve or stronghold. A Vendeen is someone or something from the west coast of France. There is a stronghold of good wine from this area, and Mourat is its leading winery. Only the red is an appellation wine, the white and rosé are IGP wines. Their wines are all Lutte Raisonnée organic.
Lying at the edges of two wine regions has led to a unique combination of grape varietals. Here Chenin Blanc is grown next to Chardonnay, and Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon are intermixed with Pinot Noir. Local varieties such as Grolleau and Négrette are also common. Mourat’s stout, flanged bottle is unique. They found an old bottle found in the cellar of the estate that they had reproduced just for themselves. Before the standardization of bottle shapes in the modern era, this was the typical bottle shape for wines of this region.

A rich, vibrant white that delivers a wild blend of citrus aromas with accents of tree fruits like apples and peaches. On the palate it’s wonderfully fresh and bright from first to last, with notes of peach, apricot and apple lingering under zesty lime juice acidity. A joyful wine of great distinction to simply sip or pair with summer salads and seafood.
