Hardywood Park Brewing Co., Richmond’s Cult Brewery
At the beginning of the century, outside of Bathurst, in New South Wales, Australia, there was a family-run sheep station. In the fall of 2001, there were two lifelong friends – Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh – both abroad – staying there. And in the evenings, when all gathered for dinner … there was good homemade beer. So revelatory was the experience of complex, delicious beer for McKay and Murtaugh that they dreamed of providing similarly tasty, well-made beer to the populace. Today, that dream is manifested in Richmond’s Hardywood Park Craft Brewery. Sitting between the Diamond and the Fan, Hardywood turns out some of the most locally raged about beers from its custom-built brewhouse in Newlands. And of course, finally Hardywood has looked to its little sister to the West and has put a pub right on West Main Street! (Woo Hoo!) However, if you think that such familiarity is going to dull Charlottesville’s love of Hardywood beers, then you’ve got another taste coming!
