Early Mountain “Young” White 2016 – $16.99
Tasting price – $15.29
(87% Vidal Blanc, 13% Petit Manseng; Madison, VA)
Early Mountain is killing it. The first two wines in their Winemakers’ Project Series, the “Pet Nat” (Pettillant Natural or Naturally Sparkling) White and Rose were interesting, cool, and delicious. The next two are now out and they are equally terrific: the “Young Wine” White and “Young Wine” Red. Bottled in clear glass bottles with spare, playful labels they are, in look and concept, some of the coolest Virginia wines we’ve ever sold.

“The idea behind the wine is to make it fun, versatile, and approachable, but still not sacrifice substance, interest, or quality – hence the variations on pressing, skin contact, fermentation vessels, etc. The Vidal Blanc was whole cluster pressed and spontaneously fermented in tank, then half was racked down to neutral barrel for a few months on lees to bring added texture and complexity. Petit Manseng was destemmed and left to soak on skins for a few hours before being pressed, then fermented in neutral barrel and left on lees until blending.” –winery

Wolfberger, Auxerrois 2015 – $11.99
Tasting price – $10.79
(Auxerrois; Alsace, France)
“Auxerrois blanc is thought to have originated in Lorraine, rather than near Auxerre in the Yonne. Recent DNA fingerprinting suggests that it is a cross between Gouais blanc and Pinot noir, the same ancestry as Chardonnay. The name Auxerrois blanc has actually been used as a synonym for Chardonnay in the Moselle region in France, which explains why there is also a longer name (Auxerrois Blanc de Laquenexy) for the grape variety.”

Te Mata, Gamay 2015 – $18.99
Tasting price – $17.09
(100% Gamay; Hawkes Bay, NZ)
“50% carbonic maceration. Young, bouncy cherry fruit with a touch of rubbery reduction giving a certain snap to the nose. Loads of floral character too. Much better than the Fleurie I threw away about an hour ago! Soft palate, modern and smooth, a well sculpted, authentic rendition of the variety.”
